Organization

The United Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers was chartered in 1903. Local 96 was chartered May 20, 1929.

Nature of Trade

The roofers job requires climbing, crawling, bending, kneeling, lifting and work in extreme temperatures. Roofing materials must be loaded and unloaded, old roofs are torn off and new one applied. Work includes below grade waterproofing or dampproofing to the foundation walls, laying out insulation boards and the use of hand and electric tools.

Apprenticeship Training

The apprenticeship program is 6000 hours of on-the-job training, plus completion of three phases of related training for advancement to journeyperson. Approximately 1400-1800 hours per year is average.

Qualifications

An applicant must meet the following requirements in order to apply for the apprenticeship program:

    1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
    2. Must be a U.S. citizen, or in the process of naturalization.
    3. Must have reliable transportation.

Application, Selection and Hiring Process

Applications are taken year round, and accepted on the basis of need and the availability of work. Applications must be obtained from the Minneapolis office, and you will be given a list of employers to apply for work. It is the responsibility of the individual to secure employment.
