Organization

The laborers International Union of North America was organized in 1903. Local 405 was chartered in 1918.

Nature of Trade

The principal tasks of the trade's men and women fall into the categories of environmental remediation, building construction and heavy/highway construction. Environmental remediation involves asbestos abatement, hazardous abatement and lead abatement. Building construction includes the tending, placement and removal of concrete, landscaping, mason/plaster tending and pipe laying. Heavy/highway construction involves drilling and blasting, tunnel and shaft, pipe laying and asphalt application.

Apprenticeship Training

The apprenticeship program is designed to achieve journey-worker status within 4,000 hours of diversified laborers work and to complete 288 hours of safety and related skills training.

Qualifications

An applicant must meet the following requirements in order to apply for the apprenticeship program:

    1. Not less than 17 years of age
    2. Physically able and have the aptitude to perform the work of the trade
    3. Upon beginning work for an employer, become a member of and maintain membership in good standing in the Laborers International Union persuant to the governing Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Application, Selection and Hiring Process

Applicants can obtain an application from the local office and should return it upon completion. The apprenticeship committee will rate all qualified applicants and rank them. The eligibility list will be used for selection for two years.
