Organization
The International Union of Painters and Allied trades was chartered in the 1800's to promote professionalism within the industry.
Members of the Painters Union are engaged in painting, paperhanging, drywall taping and finishing, high-pressure water blasting, and other allied crafts.
Nature of Trade
The protection and beautification of the exterior and interiors of buildings and structures of all types and many other surfaces important to our everyday living is the principal activity of those working in the painting industry.
Painters prepare surfaces of buildings and other structures and then apply paint, varnish, enamel, lacquer and similar materials to these surfaces. Painters also prepare and cover room interiors with wallpaper, fabrics, vinyl, and other materials.
Formal Training
The accepted training for the painting trades is a formal apprenticeship in which the beginner receives on-the-job training where he or she learns all aspects of the work under the guidance of skilled craftsmen and receives related classroom instruction correlated with manipulative training.
The term of apprenticeship is three years (6,000) of continuous work experience supplemented by a minimum of 144 hours each year of related technical classroom instruction.
